Set in 19th-century British-ruled India, the story follows Lakmé, the daughter of a fanatical Brahmin priest named Nilakantha.Nilakantha hates the occupying British forces for forbidding local religious practices.Lakmé falls in love with Gérald, a British officer who wanders onto sacred temple grounds.
